Snow day calculator Wisconsin
Best time to check
- The evening before, after 9 pm
- The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
- The morning of, 5 to 7 am
- The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.
When districts actually decide
- Portland Public Schools, Oregon publishes its closure decision no later than 5 am (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Omaha Public Schools announced the 23 January 2026 cold closure at 5:50 pm the evening before (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Little Rock School District announced a two-day closure the afternoon before the 9 January 2025 storm (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Minnesota e-learning days must be announced at least two hours before the normal start time, by statute (read 10 Oct 2026)
Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.
Wisconsin schools usually close around 7 inches of overnight snow. Seven inches overnight or wind chill near -35 °F; Milwaukee closes a little sooner. The meter below opens on Milwaukee; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the Wisconsin threshold.
How much snow it takes in Wisconsin
Wisconsin closes for wind chill near -35 and for snow around 7 inches, with Milwaukee a little sooner. Milwaukee averages 48.7 inches a season and 5 days with 3 inches or more, Madison 51.8 inches, Green Bay 55.6, and January is the snowiest month at all three. The 2024-25 winter was close to normal by the state's own count: an average of 26 storms and 49.3 inches of snow, 332,458 tons of salt spread on the state highways. Plowing is a county business here: the Department of Transportation contracts all 72 county highway departments to clear its 34,000 lane miles.
The model's 7-inch threshold is where a snow closure becomes common; the cold term carries the rest. When a blizzard closed D.C. Everest and Wausau on 16 and 17 March 2026, Everest had used up its snow days and announced that any further weather closures would be virtual learning days, while Wausau had three allotted snow days in its calendar. That is the Wisconsin pattern: a few plain snow days, then virtual.
Wisconsin winter by the numbers
| Station | Snow per season | Days with 1″+ | Days with 3″+ | Snowiest month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee | 48.7″ | 13.6 | 5.0 | Jan |
| Madison | 51.8″ | 14.9 | 5.1 | Jan |
| Green Bay | 55.6″ | 16.7 | 5.8 | Jan |

How closures are decided in Wisconsin
Wisconsin's year is written in hours, not days: 1,137 hours of direct pupil instruction for grades 7 to 12, 1,050 for grades 1 to 6 and 437 for kindergarten, per the Education Commission of the States' 2023 survey, which the Department of Public Instruction's compliance check for grades 7 to 12 confirms (Wis. Stat. 121.02 and PI 8.01). A day closed by order of the district administrator for inclement weather still counts as a school day unless the school board decides otherwise, but the hours must be reached, so districts recover lost time by adding minutes to each day or adding days.
The department has also said a district may offer a virtual learning day and count it as a day of instruction, with no cap or state approval stated. The closure decision is the district administrator's by statute. Wisconsin's 420 regular districts therefore vary widely: some keep three or more plain snow days, some go virtual from the first storm.
- Minimum school year

- Weather closures
- Count as school days unless the board says otherwise; lost hours recovered by added minutes or days
- Virtual snow days
- May count as a day of instruction, per the Department of Public Instruction; no cap stated
- Who decides
- The district administrator, by statute
Questions people ask
- Do Wisconsin schools have to make up snow days?
- They have to make up the hours. A weather closure counts as a school day unless the board decides otherwise, but the 1,137 or 1,050 hours still have to be reached, so districts add minutes to the remaining days or add days to the calendar. Most schedule spare hours so the first few closures cost nothing.
- Can a Wisconsin district count a virtual day as school?
- Yes. The Department of Public Instruction has said a district may offer a virtual learning day and count it as a day of instruction, and it stated no cap or approval step. D.C. Everest switched to virtual days in March 2026 once its snow days were used.
- How cold does it have to be to close school in Wisconsin?
- There is no state number; each district administrator decides, and wind chills near -35 are a common local trigger. The meter scores wind chill at bus time and any Extreme Cold or Wind Chill Warning; for a clear, bitter night use the cold-day calculator.
- Does Milwaukee close on less snow than Green Bay?
- A little. Milwaukee averages 48.7 inches a season to Green Bay's 55.6 and 5 days with 3 inches or more to Green Bay's 5.8, and a big city's side streets clear more slowly. The model's 7-inch threshold is statewide; read the reasons under the number for your own ZIP.
