Best time to check

The evening before, after 9 pm
The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
The morning of, 5 to 7 am
The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.

When districts actually decide

Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.

West Virginia schools usually close around 3 inches of overnight snow. Steep bus routes close counties on 2 to 3 inches or any ice. The meter below opens on Charleston, West Virginia; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the West Virginia threshold.

How much snow it takes in West Virginia

West Virginia closes for its roads. Charleston averages 31.5 inches a season and 2.7 days with 3 inches or more, Huntington 19.8 inches, and Elkins in the mountains 68.9 inches with 8.1 such days; January is the snowiest month everywhere. But every one of the state's 55 districts is a county, and a county bus route climbs hollows and ridge roads that the Division of Highways, with more than 35,000 miles to treat on a 55 million dollar season budget, reaches last. Two to three inches, or any ice, is enough to close those routes, which is where the model's 3-inch threshold comes from.

The counties also keep count. Doddridge County used all its built-in weather days by mid-January 2025 and held its first Non-Traditional Instruction day on 16 January, which is the sequence most West Virginia counties follow: calendar days first, then NTI, then make-up.

How closures are decided in West Virginia

West Virginia requires 180 separate instructional days (W. Va. Code 18-5-45). The law gives counties two cushions. First, a county may apply up to five days of accrued equivalent time, built up by running longer days than the minimum, to cancel days lost to necessary closures. Second, with a plan approved by the State Board, a county may deliver instruction through alternative methods on up to five days when schools are closed for inclement weather, and those Non-Traditional Instruction days count as instructional days. Beyond those, lost days are rescheduled on non-instructional days or outside the calendar.

A 2026 bill to raise the NTI cap was sent to the Senate Finance Committee on 4 February 2026; we did not find whether it passed. The statute text was read from a mirror current to January 2024, since the legislature's code site was blocked when we checked, and we did not find a state rule naming who decides a closure; it is the county superintendent.

Questions people ask

What is an NTI day in West Virginia?
A Non-Traditional Instruction day: schools are closed for weather but the county teaches by alternative methods under a plan the State Board has approved, and the day counts toward the 180. A county may use up to five a year under the statute as of January 2024; a bill to raise that was pending in 2026.
How many snow days do West Virginia counties get before summer shrinks?
Up to ten in effect: five days of accrued equivalent time that can cancel closures, plus five NTI days, on top of any spare days built into the county calendar. Doddridge County ran through its calendar days by mid-January 2025 and moved to NTI.
Why does 2 inches close a West Virginia county?
Because the buses run hollows and ridge roads that are not treated by bus time, and a glaze on a grade is worse than 6 inches on flat ground. Charleston averages 2.7 days a year with 3 inches or more, so the cities are not practised either. The meter weighs freezing rain hours and any warning on top of the total.
Do the mountain counties close on 3 inches?
Less readily. Elkins averages 68.9 inches a season and 23.4 days with an inch or more, so Randolph and Pocahontas counties are built for routine snow and close for storms and drifting instead. The model's 3-inch statewide threshold overstates the chance there; read the reasons under the number.
