Best time to check

The evening before, after 9 pm
The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
The morning of, 5 to 7 am
The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.

When districts actually decide

Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.

South Carolina schools usually close around 1 inches of overnight snow. An inch, or any ice, closes schools; the Upstate sees it most. The meter below opens on Greenville; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the South Carolina threshold.

How much snow it takes in South Carolina

South Carolina's snow lives in the Upstate. Greenville-Spartanburg averages 3.9 inches a season and 1.2 days with an inch or more; Columbia 1.2 inches and 0.4 such days; Charleston 0.3 inches, about one measurable snowfall a decade. January is the snowiest month everywhere. The model's 1-inch threshold is a statewide number for a state where an inch is a real event, and freezing rain on the Piedmont's hills and bridges closes schools more often than snow does.

The state's winter response is sized for the rare big one. Ahead of Winter Storm Fern on 22 January 2026 the Department of Transportation positioned nearly 4,000 employees, 1,200 pieces of equipment and 60,000 tons of salt around the state, with brine and calcium chloride for pretreating. For most of the Lowcountry, the meter will show a chance near zero all winter because the hourly forecast will contain rain.

South Carolina also writes its snow-day arithmetic into law, in a three-rung ladder.

1991-2020 climate normals for the airport or first-order station in each city, read 2026-10-10 from the NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. “Days with 3″+” is the average number of calendar days a year with at least 3 inches of new snow. NOAA publishes no 1991-2020 snowfall normal for Greenville's downtown airport; the Greer figures are from Greenville-Spartanburg International.

How closures are decided in South Carolina

The statutory school term is 190 days, of which at least 180 must be instructional days (S.C. Code 59-1-425). Days missed for snow or extreme weather must be made up, and every district must designate at least three make-up days in its calendar. Once a school has made up three full days, the local board may by majority vote forgive up to three more, and the State Board of Education may forgive up to three additional days beyond that. So a district can lose nine days to weather before the tenth has to come out of summer.

The virtual option is the eLearning day. Virtual instruction is inside the statute's definition of an instructional day (S.C. Code 59-1-210), and districts approved by the Department of Education may use up to five eLearning days a year for inclement weather or other emergencies, per a district's published programme page; the department's own handbook was not reachable when we checked, so the cap is cited from the district. We found no dated closure list we could read and no state rule naming who decides; the 80 regular districts make their own calls.

Questions people ask

How many snow days can South Carolina schools miss before summer gets shorter?
Nine, in effect. Three make-up days are built into every calendar by law; after those are used, the local board may forgive up to three more by majority vote, and the State Board may forgive up to three beyond that. Any further days are made up.
What is an eLearning day in South Carolina?
A virtual school day used instead of a closure on days students cannot safely get to school. Districts the Department of Education has approved may use up to five a year, and because state law counts virtual instruction as an instructional day, an eLearning day needs no make-up.
Does Greenville close on an inch?
Usually, and for ice at less. The Upstate averages 1.2 days a year with an inch or more, so an inch is unusual there, and the hills and bridges glaze quickly. The meter weighs freezing rain hours and any Winter Storm Warning on top of the snow total.
Will the meter ever show a snow day in Charleston?
Only when the hourly forecast contains snow or freezing rain, which at 0.3 inches a season is roughly once a decade. A cold rain is not a closure signal; a Lowcountry glaze on the bridges would be.
