Snow day calculator Rhode Island
Best time to check
- The evening before, after 9 pm
- The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
- The morning of, 5 to 7 am
- The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.
When districts actually decide
- Portland Public Schools, Oregon publishes its closure decision no later than 5 am (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Omaha Public Schools announced the 23 January 2026 cold closure at 5:50 pm the evening before (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Little Rock School District announced a two-day closure the afternoon before the 9 January 2025 storm (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Minnesota e-learning days must be announced at least two hours before the normal start time, by statute (read 10 Oct 2026)
Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.
Rhode Island schools usually close around 5 inches of overnight snow. Five inches overnight, or a coastal storm with wind and ice. The meter below opens on Providence; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the Rhode Island threshold.
How much snow it takes in Rhode Island
Rhode Island is small enough for one storm to cover it and divided enough to answer it 36 different ways. Providence averages 36.6 inches a season, 3.8 days with 3 inches or more and 1.7 days with 5 inches or more, with February the snowiest month. The model's 5-inch threshold is where full closures become common; a coastal storm with wind and ice off Narragansett Bay closes on less, and the meter scores wind over 35 mph and each hour of freezing rain on top of the total.
The 13 February 2024 storm is the clearest picture of the state's habits. Providence, Cranston, Warwick, Pawtucket and Woonsocket closed; Bristol-Warren, Central Falls, North Providence, Smithfield and Tiverton held virtual learning days; East Providence and Foster-Glocester split school by school; Little Compton went virtual in the morning and took a snow day in the afternoon. Ahead of the 26 January 2026 storm, districts again divided between cancelling and going virtual.
Rhode Island winter by the numbers
| Station | Snow per season | Days with 1″+ | Days with 3″+ | Snowiest month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Providence | 36.6″ | 9.8 | 3.8 | Feb |
1991-2020 climate normals for the airport or first-order station in each city, read 2026-10-10 from the NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. “Days with 3″+” is the average number of calendar days a year with at least 3 inches of new snow.
How closures are decided in Rhode Island
Rhode Island requires 180 days and 1,080 hours of school a year, per the Education Commission of the States' 2023 survey; the General Assembly's statute pages and the Department of Education's guidance were not reachable when we checked, so the survey is cited and the statutory make-up and forgiveness rules are not stated here.
Virtual snow days have a legal footing. A state law passed before 2019 allows districts to hold remote learning days on weather and emergency closures under a plan approved by the state education council, as a 2020 report described, and one district's plan capped them at three a year. We could not read the state's own text, so the current cap and approval route are not stated. Each of the 36 regular districts chooses between a closure, a virtual day or a hybrid, which is why neighbouring towns so often differ on the same morning.
- Minimum school year
- 180 days and 1,080 hours (Education Commission of the States, 2023)
- Virtual snow days
- Allowed under a state-approved district plan; the state text could not be read on 10 Oct 2026
- Make-up rules
- Not published here: statute and department pages were unreachable when checked
- Regular districts
- 36 (NCES, 2021-22)
Questions people ask
- Why do Rhode Island towns make different calls in the same storm?
- Because each of the 36 districts decides for itself whether to close, hold a virtual day or mix by school. On 13 February 2024 Providence closed while Bristol-Warren and Smithfield went virtual and East Providence split by building. The meter scores the chance that buildings close for your coordinates.
- Can Rhode Island schools hold virtual learning on a snow day?
- Yes, under a district plan approved by the state education council, as a 2020 report on the law described; one district's plan allowed up to three such days a year. We could not read the state's own text when we checked, so confirm the current cap with your district.
- Is 3 inches a snow day in Providence?
- Usually a delay. Providence averages 3.8 days a year with 3 inches or more, so towns plow that overnight; closures become common from about 5 inches, or at any depth when a coastal storm brings wind and ice. The meter shows the delay-or-closure number separately.
- Do Rhode Island snow days have to be made up?
- The 180-day and 1,080-hour requirement applies, and a virtual day under an approved plan counts toward it. We could not read the state's make-up and waiver rules when we checked on 10 October 2026, so we do not state them here.
