Best time to check

The evening before, after 9 pm
The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
The morning of, 5 to 7 am
The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.

When districts actually decide

Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.

Oklahoma schools usually close around 1.5 inches of overnight snow. Ice storms are the main closer; 1 to 2 inches of snow usually does it too. The meter below opens on Oklahoma City; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the Oklahoma threshold.

How much snow it takes in Oklahoma

Oklahoma closes for ice first and for an inch or two of snow second. Oklahoma City averages 6.7 inches a season and 0.6 days with 3 inches or more; Tulsa 8.7 inches and 0.9 such days. The snow spreads thinly across December, January and February rather than piling up in one month. The model's 1.5-inch threshold is where a snow closure becomes likely; a night of freezing rain closes schools at any depth, and the meter scores each hour of it.

Winter Storm Fern in the last week of January 2026 showed what a real storm does here: one day became two, then three, and districts ran out of calendar. Norman had no weather days left, Edmond had four built in, Yukon still had some, and Oklahoma City Public Schools was looking at make-up minutes with 17 April already spent. The state spent nearly 8 million dollars on the response, using 44,000 tons of salt and sand and more than 507,000 gallons of brine.

How closures are decided in Oklahoma

Oklahoma requires schools to be in session for at least 180 days, or 1,080 hours if the board adopts a school-hours policy and tells the State Board before 15 October, with a floor of 165 days on an hours calendar (70 O.S. 1-109). A shorter term is allowed only when conditions beyond the district's control make it impossible and the State Board of Education concurs in writing. Districts bank snow days in their calendars for everything else.

The virtual option arrives in 2026-27. Senate Bill 758, approved by the governor on 3 May 2025, lets a district count up to two days or 12 hours of virtual instruction while school is closed, but only if the State Superintendent approved the district's virtual instruction plan, the governor issued a state of emergency or proclamation for the situation, and the local board approves the use. The State Department of Education must report on emergency virtual days by 30 June 2027 and yearly after that. The new allowance did not apply to the days lost to Fern. Oklahoma's 509 regular districts decide their own closures.

Questions people ask

Can Oklahoma schools count a virtual day instead of a snow day?
From the 2026-27 school year, up to two days or 12 hours, under Senate Bill 758 of 2025. It takes three things at once: a virtual instruction plan approved by the State Superintendent, a governor's state of emergency or proclamation covering the situation, and the local board's approval. Before that, every closure had to be made up.
How did districts handle the January 2026 storm?
By spending their banked days and then scrambling. After three straight closures Norman had no weather days left, Edmond had four built in, and Oklahoma City was weighing make-up minutes. The 2025 virtual-day law did not yet apply, so those days were made up in person.
Does Oklahoma City close for an inch of snow?
Usually if it is on the roads at bus time, and more surely if sleet or freezing rain comes with it; the city averages 0.6 days a year with 3 inches or more. The meter weighs the overnight total, the morning hours, freezing rain hours and any Winter Storm Warning for your coordinates.
Is ice the real Oklahoma closer?
Yes. Ice storms glaze bridges and the rural routes the buses use, and the state's winter response is mostly brine and salt-sand on the highways rather than plowing. A forecast with no snow but three hours of freezing rain before dawn can show a higher chance than a 2-inch snowfall.
