Snow day calculator North Dakota
Best time to check
- The evening before, after 9 pm
- The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
- The morning of, 5 to 7 am
- The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.
When districts actually decide

- Minnesota e-learning days must be announced at least two hours before the normal start time, by statute (read 10 Oct 2026)
Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.
North Dakota schools usually close around 8 inches of overnight snow. Blizzard warnings and wind chill, not inches, close North Dakota schools. The meter below opens on Fargo; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the North Dakota threshold.
How much snow it takes in North Dakota
North Dakota schools close for blizzards, not for snowfall. Fargo averages 51.4 inches a season, Bismarck 50.5 and Grand Forks 48.4, each with about 14 days a year of an inch or more and 4 or 5 days of 3 inches or more, and December is the snowiest month at all three. None of that closes school on its own. The model's 8-inch threshold is there so that the wind and wind chill terms, which carry the real decision, are not drowned out by ordinary snow.
A Blizzard Warning is the signal. On 18 December 2025 Fargo and West Fargo cancelled classes under one, Fargo Public Schools used the storm make-up day built into its calendar for the following April, and West Fargo set no instructional expectations for the day, virtual or otherwise. The state transportation department runs 350 trucks over about 17,000 lane miles and closes interstates outright when visibility goes; a closed I-94 is a closed school day in the towns along it.

1991-2020 climate normals for the airport or first-order station in each city, read 2026-10-10 from the NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. “Days with 3″+” is the average number of calendar days a year with at least 3 inches of new snow.
How closures are decided in North Dakota
North Dakota counts hours: at least 962.5 hours of instruction for elementary pupils and 1,050 for middle and high school (NDCC 15.1-06-04). When a district closes or shortens a day it must reschedule the hours to reach the minimum (NDCC 15.1-27-23), and virtual instruction may satisfy that; where rescheduling would create undue hardship, the governor may waive it in whole or in part for state-aid purposes. Fargo's built-in storm make-up day is the local version of this.
The virtual option is NDAC 67-30-01, Virtual Learning Because of Weather or Other Conditions, in force since 1 January 2022. A school board that wants it adopts a local policy defining the procedures; instruction under the chapter is limited to nine calendar weeks, extendable through the Department of Public Instruction, may be synchronous or asynchronous, and cannot be used on assessment days. A 2025 law, House Bill 1105, confirmed school boards' authority over virtual instruction policies. The 169 regular districts decide for themselves, and the rule defines a cancellation simply as the district deciding not to hold in-person instruction.

Questions people ask
- Does Fargo close for snow?
- Rarely for snow alone; Fargo averages 4.7 days a year with 3 inches or more and plows through them. It closes for Blizzard Warnings, as on 18 December 2025, when wind and visibility rather than depth stop the buses. The meter scores the warning and the wind term; read those lines under the number.
- Do North Dakota schools have to make up blizzard days?
- Yes, to the hour. Cancelled hours must be rescheduled to reach 962.5 or 1,050 hours, in person or virtually, unless the governor waives the rescheduling for undue hardship. Fargo keeps a storm make-up day in its calendar each spring for this.
- Can a North Dakota district teach virtually on a storm day?
- If its board has adopted a policy under NDAC 67-30-01. The chapter has applied since 1 January 2022, allows synchronous or asynchronous instruction, limits it to nine calendar weeks without an extension, and bars it on assessment days. West Fargo chose not to on 18 December 2025.
- How cold is too cold for school in North Dakota?
- There is no state number; districts decide, and they run school in cold that would close most of the country. The meter scores wind chill at bus time and any Extreme Cold or Wind Chill Warning; the cold-day calculator on this site is built for that forecast.
