Snow day calculator Nevada
Best time to check
- The evening before, after 9 pm
- The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
- The morning of, 5 to 7 am
- The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.
When districts actually decide
- Portland Public Schools, Oregon publishes its closure decision no later than 5 am (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Omaha Public Schools announced the 23 January 2026 cold closure at 5:50 pm the evening before (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Little Rock School District announced a two-day closure the afternoon before the 9 January 2025 storm (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Minnesota e-learning days must be announced at least two hours before the normal start time, by statute (read 10 Oct 2026)
Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.
Nevada schools usually close around 3 inches of overnight snow. Reno and Carson City close on heavy Sierra snow; Las Vegas does not have the question. The meter below opens on Reno; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the Nevada threshold.
How much snow it takes in Nevada
Nevada's snow question belongs to the north. Reno averages 20.9 inches a season and 1.8 days with 3 inches or more, Carson City 14 inches, and Elko, out in the high desert, 41.2 inches. Las Vegas averages 0.2 inches and has nothing to decide. The model's 3-inch threshold is a Reno and Carson number: a Sierra storm that drops a few inches on the valley floor while shutting the passes, with buses on steep foothill streets, is what closes Washoe County.
The pattern on 17 February 2026 was the standard one. Every Washoe County School District school and every Storey County school closed for the whole day for heavy snow, announced the evening before. Elko tolerates more; a Las Vegas ZIP will show a chance near zero all winter, honestly.
Nevada is also one of the few states that put the snow days in the calendar by law.
Nevada winter by the numbers
| Station | Snow per season | Days with 1″+ | Days with 3″+ | Snowiest month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reno | 20.9″ | 5.9 | 1.8 | Jan/Feb/Dec |
| Las Vegas | 0.2″ | 0.1 | 0.0 | Dec |
| Elko | 41.2″ | 13.9 | 3.1 | Jan |
| Carson City | 14.0″ | 5.0 | 2.0 | Dec |
1991-2020 climate normals for the airport or first-order station in each city, read 2026-10-10 from the NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. “Days with 3″+” is the average number of calendar days a year with at least 3 inches of new snow.
How closures are decided in Nevada
Nevada requires 180 days of free school a year (NRS 388.090), scheduled by each district's board of trustees, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction may approve an alternative schedule with at least as many minutes. The weather rule is NRS 388.095: every district must schedule at least three contingent days, or the equivalent in added minutes of at least 30 a day, to be used if a natural disaster, inclement weather or an accident forces a closure. Beyond those three, the Superintendent may on application let a district count further lost days.
There is no statute authorising a remote day in place of a closure. Washoe County tried digital snow days and dropped them in March 2019 after the Nevada Department of Education ruled them improper; students there now get a plain snow day with no work to do at home. Nevada has only 18 regular districts, one per county plus Carson City, so a Washoe or Clark decision covers an entire metro at once.
- Minimum school year
- 180 days (NRS 388.090)
- Built-in snow days
- At least 3 contingent days, or added minutes, in every calendar (NRS 388.095)
- Remote snow days
- No statute; Washoe's digital days were ruled improper in 2019
- Regular districts
- 18 (NCES, 2021-22)
Questions people ask
- How many snow days does a Nevada district get?
- Three are built into every calendar by law, as whole days or as at least 30 extra minutes a day. If a district loses more than that, it can apply to the Superintendent of Public Instruction to have the extra days counted rather than made up.
- Does Reno do remote learning on snow days?
- No. Washoe County School District ended its digital snow days in 2019 after the state education department ruled them improper, and said students would simply observe a snow day. The meter's number is about the closure itself.
- What closed all Washoe County schools on 17 February 2026?
- A winter storm with heavy snow accumulation, announced the evening of 16 February for the entire day. Reno averages only 1.8 days a year with 3 inches or more, so a storm like that is a real event there; the meter scores the overnight total, the morning hours and any warning for your coordinates.
- Will the meter ever show a snow day in Las Vegas?
- Only if the hourly forecast contains snow or freezing rain, which at McCarran's 0.2 inches a season almost never happens. The mountain communities around the valley are a different question; type their ZIP rather than the city's.
