Snow day calculator Nebraska
Best time to check
- The evening before, after 9 pm
- The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
- The morning of, 5 to 7 am
- The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.
When districts actually decide
- Portland Public Schools, Oregon publishes its closure decision no later than 5 am (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Omaha Public Schools announced the 23 January 2026 cold closure at 5:50 pm the evening before (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Little Rock School District announced a two-day closure the afternoon before the 9 January 2025 storm (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Minnesota e-learning days must be announced at least two hours before the normal start time, by statute (read 10 Oct 2026)
Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.
Nebraska schools usually close around 5 inches of overnight snow. Blizzard conditions and wind chill close schools; five to six inches on a calm night may only delay. The meter below opens on Omaha; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the Nebraska threshold.
How much snow it takes in Nebraska
Nebraska snow is measured in wind. Omaha averages 27.1 inches a season and 2.6 days with 3 inches or more, Lincoln 26 inches, North Platte 29.6, and Scottsbluff in the Panhandle 42.5. February is the snowiest month in the east. Five or six inches on a calm night usually means a late start; the same snow with a 40 mph northwest wind drifts county roads shut and closes every rural district in its path.
That is why the model sets Nebraska at 5 inches but gives wind over 35 mph with snow on the ground, a Blizzard Warning and wind chill at bus time their own weight. The 23 January 2026 closures in Omaha, Elkhorn, Westside and Bellevue were about an arctic blast, not accumulation; Omaha Public Schools announced at 5:50 the evening before.
Omaha also went back to real snow days for 2025-26, after students, teachers and families said they preferred them to remote days.

How closures are decided in Nebraska
Nebraska's year is written in hours under the State Board's Rule 10: at least 400 for kindergarten, 1,032 through grade 8 and 1,080 for grades 9 to 12 (92 NAC 10, section 003), and lunch periods and early dismissals for tournaments, parades or picnics cannot be counted. There is no fixed allowance of snow days. A district that cannot reach its hours because of severe storm conditions or epidemic sickness may offer fewer hours after its board secretary swears an affidavit to the State Board (Neb. Rev. Stat. 79-213), which is the only statutory relief.
We found no state rule on whether a remote day counts toward the hours; Rule 10 does not address it, and the Department of Education's site did not answer the question when we checked. Practice is local: Omaha Public Schools dropped remote snow days for 2025-26, while other Nebraska districts kept them. The state's 244 regular districts each decide their own closures.
- Minimum school year
- 400 / 1,032 / 1,080 hours by grade band (92 NAC 10)
- Weather relief
- Affidavit to the State Board after severe storms (Neb. Rev. Stat. 79-213)
- Remote snow days
- No state rule found; Omaha returned to traditional snow days in 2025-26
- Regular districts
- 244 (NCES, 2021-22)
Questions people ask
- Does Nebraska close for wind chill?
- Yes, and it is the common Nebraska closure. Omaha, Elkhorn, Westside and Bellevue all closed on 23 January 2026 for an arctic blast with no new snow. The meter scores wind chill at bus time and any Extreme Cold Warning; the cold-day calculator on this site is built for those mornings.
- Is there a snow-day limit in Nebraska?
- No fixed number. Districts must reach their required hours, and a district that cannot because of severe storms may offer fewer hours after a sworn affidavit to the State Board. In practice districts carry spare hours in the calendar and add minutes or days when they run short.
- Did Omaha get rid of remote snow days?
- For 2025-26, yes. Omaha Public Schools went back to traditional snow days based on feedback from students, teachers and families, while some other Nebraska districts kept online learning for weather days. The state has no rule either way that we could find.
- Why does 5 inches close a rural district but only delay Lincoln?
- Drifting. Open county roads blow shut in a strong northwest wind while city streets stay passable, so rural districts close on totals that the cities plow through. The meter adds a wind term when there is snow on the ground and wind over 35 mph, which is the Plains signature.
