Columbus, Ohio, snow from 11 pm to 7 am totalling 6 inches, 24 °F, Winter Storm Warning active → about 90 % chance of a closure. Ohio districts usually close around 4 inches, the snow is still falling at bus time, and the warning tips it over.

2 inches in Atlanta

Atlanta, 2 inches of snow ending at 5 am, 27 °F → about 85 %. Georgia closes on an inch. The same 2 inches in Minneapolis is a 5 % day: Minnesota needs 8 inches or a wind chill near -35 °F.

Freezing rain, no snow

Raleigh, three hours of freezing drizzle before dawn, 30 °F, no snow → about 70 %. Ice closes schools that laugh at snow, and the model treats a glaze in a low-tolerance state as the strongest single signal.

How it is calculated

Overnight snow (6 pm to 8 am) is divided by the closure threshold for your state, with morning snow counted extra because it falls on the commute and snow from the day before counted partially. Hours of freezing rain, wind chill at bus time, wind over 35 mph with snow on the ground and any active National Weather Service warning each add a fixed amount to the score. Warm overnight air halves the snow term. Colleges are discounted. The score becomes a percentage through a logistic curve; weekends, federal holidays and the winter-break days return 0 %.

Questions people ask

Is a snow day predictor the same as a snow day calculator?

Same thing, different name. Both mean a tool that turns tonight's forecast into the chance school closes tomorrow. This one shows the reason for every point of the score rather than only the number, so you can judge it yourself.

How accurate is the snow day calculator?

It is a probability from the forecast, not a decision from your superintendent. On clear cases (a foot of snow, or nothing at all) it is right nearly every time; the hard calls are 2 to 4 inches near the local threshold, where districts split. We publish the hit rate after every storm on the accuracy page.

What counts as a snow day for the calculator?

A full closure of K-12 public schools for the whole day. The second number, delay or closure, adds two-hour delays. Early dismissals are mentioned in the reasons when snow arrives during the school day but are not scored.

Why does the same snowfall give a different chance in another state?

Because districts close for what they are not equipped for. Georgia closes on an inch; Minnesota needs about eight. The model carries a closure threshold for every state, and the state pages list them.

Does it work for private schools and colleges?

Pick the school type under the location box. Private schools mostly follow the local public district, so they get a small discount; colleges close far less often and are discounted heavily.

Does it use the Winter Storm Warning for my area?

Where does the forecast come from?

Hourly forecasts from Open-Meteo, which blends the national weather models (NOAA's GFS and HRRR in the US, ECMWF, and the national services in Canada and the UK). It refreshes every 30 minutes; the night before a storm, check again after 9 pm when the evening model runs are in.

Can I check the chance of a snow day for Monday or later in the week?

The meter shows tomorrow and the next three days. Anything past two days out is marked low confidence because snow totals in a forecast three days ahead routinely move by several inches.
