Snow day calculator Michigan
Best time to check
- The evening before, after 9 pm
- The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
- The morning of, 5 to 7 am
- The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.

Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.
Michigan schools usually close around 6 inches of overnight snow. Lake-effect country: 6 inches, drifting, or a wind chill warning; the Upper Peninsula tolerates more. The meter below opens on Detroit; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the Michigan threshold.
How much snow it takes in Michigan
Michigan is lake-effect country, and the lake decides which half of the state is snowed in. Grand Rapids, downwind of Lake Michigan, averages 77.6 inches a season and 8.1 days with 3 inches or more; Detroit, on the sheltered side, averages 45 inches and 4.3 such days; Marquette in the Upper Peninsula averages 102 inches at the city station. Lansing and Flint sit in between at around 50 inches. January is the snowiest month everywhere.
The model's 6-inch threshold reflects districts with their own plow contracts and bus drivers who drive on snow all winter. What tips a Michigan morning is drifting on open county roads, a wind chill warning, or lake-effect bands that drop 6 inches on one township and nothing on the next. The Upper Peninsula tolerates more than the threshold; the Thumb and the northern Lower Peninsula close for drifts at less.
Michigan also counts its snow days more carefully than most states, because the law gives districts a fixed number.

How closures are decided in Michigan
Michigan requires at least 1,098 hours and 180 days of student instruction a year, as the governor's office restated when signing relief for the 2025 ice storm. Within that, districts are allowed six unscheduled cancellation days, can apply to the Department of Education for three more forgiven days, and past nine must make the days up, which usually means June. The department's forgiven-time request form is where the application goes, and it closes each spring.
The legislature has twice stepped in for hard winters: a June 2025 law gave the twelve northern counties under the March 2025 ice-storm state of emergency flexibility on the 1,098-hour and 180-day minimum, and a May 2026 law forgave four to five extra days in more than 40 counties. We could not read the statute text or the department's guidance on virtual snow days, which were blocked when we checked, so no remote-day rule is stated here. Michigan's 537 regular districts each decide their own closures.

Questions people ask
- How many snow days do Michigan schools get?
- Six unscheduled cancellation days without penalty, and a district can ask the Michigan Department of Education to forgive up to three more. After nine, the days have to be made up. By 26 January 2026 one Thumb-area district had already used five of its six.
- Does Michigan forgive extra snow days in bad winters?
- It has, by special law. A June 2025 act gave districts in the twelve counties under the spring 2025 ice-storm emergency flexibility on the minimum, and a May 2026 act forgave four to five more days in over 40 counties. Neither is automatic; each took a bill.
- Why does Grand Rapids get a snow day when Detroit does not?
- Lake Michigan. West Michigan averages 77.6 inches a season against Detroit's 45, and lake-effect bands can put 6 inches on Kent County while Wayne County stays dry. The meter reads the hourly forecast for your coordinates, so it sees the band if the models do.
- Does the Upper Peninsula close on 6 inches?
- Rarely. Marquette averages 102 inches a season and 31.5 days a year with an inch or more, so the model's statewide 6-inch threshold overstates the chance there. Read the reasons under the number: a Blizzard Warning or deep wind chill matters more in the U.P. than the total.
