Best time to check

The evening before, after 9 pm
The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
The morning of, 5 to 7 am
The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.

When districts actually decide

Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.

California schools usually close around 2 inches of overnight snow. Only mountain and foothill districts ever close; Sierra and Shasta towns act on chain controls and road closures. The meter below opens on South Lake Tahoe; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the California threshold.

How much snow it takes in California

For most of California the snow day does not exist. NOAA publishes no snowfall normal for Los Angeles or Sacramento because there is nothing to average. The state's snow days belong to the Sierra, the Shasta-Cascade and the mountain towns: Truckee averages 206.6 inches a season with 23.5 days of 3 inches or more, Tahoe City 179 inches, and Redding at the top of the Central Valley 2.6 inches.

The model's 2-inch threshold is a foothill number. It is meant for districts like those along Highway 50 and Interstate 80, where chain controls, closed passes and buses on steep grades decide the day. Truckee itself tolerates far more than 2 inches; what closes Tahoe Truckee Unified is a storm that is still dumping at 6 am, and on 13 March 2025 it and Lake Tahoe Unified and Camino Union all closed for exactly that. In the mountains, read the reasons under the number rather than the threshold.

1991-2020 climate normals for the airport or first-order station in each city, read 2026-10-10 from the NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. “Days with 3″+” is the average number of calendar days a year with at least 3 inches of new snow. NOAA publishes no 1991-2020 snowfall normal for Sacramento, Los Angeles or Blue Canyon. Truckee and Tahoe City are co-operative stations, not airports.

How closures are decided in California

California funds its schools by the day and the minute. A district that offers fewer than 180 days of instruction loses a slice of its Local Control Funding Formula grant for each missing day (Educ. Code 46200), and the minimum annual minutes run from 36,000 in kindergarten to 64,800 in grades 9 to 12 (Educ. Code 46201).

The escape hatch is Education Code 41422, which lets a district that could not operate because of fire, flood, earthquake, snowstorm or epidemic keep its full apportionment, on affidavits from the governing board and the county superintendent to the State Superintendent. Snowstorm is named in the statute. We found no state programme that swaps a snow day for a remote day; the independent-study provision in that section was tied to the 2021-22 pandemic year. We could not read the Department of Education's form J-13A page, which carries the current waiver procedure, so the paperwork is not described here. The 991 regular districts decide closures locally.

Questions people ask

Can a California school get a snow day at all?
Only where it snows: Tahoe, Truckee, Mammoth, the Shasta foothills, Big Bear and the Tehachapi passes. The meter reads the hourly forecast for your exact coordinates, so a Sacramento ZIP shows near zero in a storm that is closing schools 90 minutes up Interstate 80.
Do Tahoe districts close on 2 inches?
No; 2 inches is the model's foothill threshold, not Truckee's. Truckee averages 206.6 inches a season and 41.9 days a year with at least an inch. The mountain closures come when heavy snow is still falling at bus time, chain controls are up and side roads are unploughed, which is what shut Tahoe Truckee Unified and Lake Tahoe Unified on 13 March 2025.
Does a snow day cost a California district money?
Not if it files for relief. Districts short of 180 days lose funding by the day, but Education Code 41422 names snowstorm as a cause for which a district can keep its full apportionment, on affidavits from its board and county superintendent.
Are there remote learning snow days in California?
We could not find a state rule that lets a remote day stand in for a weather closure; the independent-study language in Education Code 41422 applied to the 2021-22 school year. Ask your district. The meter predicts whether buildings close, not how the day is made up.
