Snow day calculator Arizona
Best time to check
- The evening before, after 9 pm
- The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
- The morning of, 5 to 7 am
- The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.
When districts actually decide
- Portland Public Schools, Oregon publishes its closure decision no later than 5 am (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Omaha Public Schools announced the 23 January 2026 cold closure at 5:50 pm the evening before (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Little Rock School District announced a two-day closure the afternoon before the 9 January 2025 storm (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Minnesota e-learning days must be announced at least two hours before the normal start time, by statute (read 10 Oct 2026)
Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.
Arizona schools usually close around 1.5 inches of overnight snow. Phoenix never sees it; Flagstaff and the high country close on heavy snow and closed highways. The meter below opens on Flagstaff; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the Arizona threshold.
How much snow it takes in Arizona
Arizona has two winters. Phoenix and Tucson do not have the question at all: Tucson's airport normal is 0.1 inches a season and NOAA publishes no snowfall normal for Phoenix Sky Harbor. Flagstaff, at 7,000 feet, averages 90.1 inches, with 10.8 days a year of 3 inches or more and 1.6 days of 10 inches or more, which is more than Buffalo gets.
So the model's 1.5-inch Arizona threshold is really a high-country threshold. It is low because the districts that see snow at all, Flagstaff, Prescott, the White Mountains and the Mogollon Rim, close when Interstate 17 and the state routes close, when buses cannot run dirt roads, and when a storm is still falling at bus time. Flagstaff Unified cancelled classes for a winter storm on 18 February 2026, which is the pattern: the forecast and the roads decide, not a depth on the lawn.
If you type a Phoenix ZIP, the meter will show the honest answer, which is a number near zero even in a storm, because the forecast will not contain snow.
Arizona winter by the numbers
| Station | Snow per season | Days with 1″+ | Days with 3″+ | Snowiest month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flagstaff | 90.1″ | 18.7 | 10.8 | Jan |
| Tucson | 0.1″ | 0.1 | 0.0 | Feb |
1991-2020 climate normals for the airport or first-order station in each city, read 2026-10-10 from the NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals. “Days with 3″+” is the average number of calendar days a year with at least 3 inches of new snow. NOAA publishes no 1991-2020 snowfall normal for Phoenix Sky Harbor.
How closures are decided in Arizona
Arizona requires at least 180 days of instruction (A.R.S. 15-341.01), although a governing board may run the equivalent minutes over a different number of days. The hours behind that calendar are set in A.R.S. 15-901: 712 hours for grades 1 to 3, 890 for grades 4 to 8 and 720 for grades 9 to 12 on a 180-day year.
We could not read the Arizona Department of Education's winter closure guidance or its instructional-time-model page; both returned an access block on every attempt, so the state's make-up and remote-day rules are not stated here. What is clear from the statute is that the calendar belongs to each of the 222 regular districts' governing boards, and that a mountain district's closure is a local decision.

- Make-up and remote-day rules
- Not published here: the state education department pages could not be read on 10 Oct 2026
- Regular districts
- 222 (NCES, 2021-22)
- Snowiest station
- Flagstaff, 90.1 inches a season, 1.6 days a year with 10 inches or more
Questions people ask
- Does school ever close for snow in Phoenix or Tucson?
- Not for snow. Tucson's 1991-2020 normal is 0.1 inches a season and Phoenix has no published snow normal. The meter will show a chance near zero there no matter what the headline says about a 'winter storm', because the hourly forecast for the valley will be rain or nothing.
- What closes schools in Flagstaff?
- Heavy snow still falling at bus time, closed highways and unploughed side roads. Flagstaff averages 90.1 inches a season, so a few inches is routine; Flagstaff Unified's closure on 18 February 2026 came with a winter storm, not a dusting. The meter weighs the overnight total, the morning hours and any Winter Storm Warning for your coordinates.
- Do Arizona districts use remote days instead of snow days?
- We could not verify this. The state education department's closure guidance was not readable when we checked on 10 October 2026, so we do not state a rule. Ask your district; the meter's number is about whether buildings close, not how the day is recovered.
- Why is the Arizona threshold only 1.5 inches when Flagstaff gets so much snow?
- Because the threshold is a statewide model estimate and most of the districts that see snow are smaller mountain and rim districts with long bus routes on county roads. Flagstaff itself tolerates more. Type a Flagstaff ZIP and read the reasons under the number rather than the threshold alone.

The closure threshold itself is our model's estimate from typical district practice, not an official figure. Districts, not states, make the call. The model page shows every term.
