Snow day calculator Alabama
Best time to check
- The evening before, after 9 pm
- The evening model runs are in by then and the forecast here refreshes every 30 minutes. A number read at 6 pm can move by several inches of snow before midnight.
- The morning of, 5 to 7 am
- The strip above shades 4 to 7 am. Snow still falling in those hours lands on the commute, so the model counts it extra, and most districts have decided by the time the buses roll at 7.
When districts actually decide
- Portland Public Schools, Oregon publishes its closure decision no later than 5 am (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Omaha Public Schools announced the 23 January 2026 cold closure at 5:50 pm the evening before (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Little Rock School District announced a two-day closure the afternoon before the 9 January 2025 storm (read 10 Oct 2026)
- Minnesota e-learning days must be announced at least two hours before the normal start time, by statute (read 10 Oct 2026)
Every district sets its own cut-off; these are published examples, not a rule.
Alabama schools usually close around 0.5 inches of overnight snow. Any accumulating snow or a glaze of ice closes schools; the state rarely has the plows for more. The meter below opens on Birmingham; type your ZIP or town and it reads tonight's hourly forecast for your exact spot and scores it against the Alabama threshold.
How much snow it takes in Alabama
Alabama is an ice state, not a snow state. Birmingham's airport averages 1.4 inches of snow a season and about one day every two years with an inch or more on the ground; Huntsville, in the Tennessee Valley, averages 2.4 inches. A closure here is almost never about depth. It is about a glaze on bridges and overpasses that the state has no routine way to clear, and about buses on rural routes that cannot be sent out on untreated roads.
That is why the model's Alabama threshold is half an inch: any accumulating snow or any freezing rain pushes the chance of a closure up sharply, and the hours of freezing rain in tonight's forecast count more than the snow total. ALDOT says it treats bridges and interstates first and that rain can wash pretreatment off before the cold arrives, which is the usual sequence in a Deep South winter storm.
The reference event is the January 2025 Gulf Coast storm. Mobile County and Baldwin County schools cancelled classes for the rest of that week, and the governor's winter-weather state of emergency ran from 20 to 28 January. A year later, in January 2026, the state declared another one.
Alabama winter by the numbers

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birmingham | 1.4″ | 0.5 | 0.1 | Mar |
| Huntsville | 2.4″ | 0.7 | 0.1 | Feb |

How closures are decided in Alabama
Alabama school boards must run at least 180 full instructional days or the hourly equivalent of 1,080 hours (Ala. Code 16-13-231). If a system falls short, its state funding is computed only for the days it was actually in session, so a closure is never free. In extreme circumstances a board can ask the State Superintendent to approve a plan that recovers lost days by lengthening other school days.
There is no state-run virtual snow day programme on the books that we could find. In January 2024 the State Superintendent said that days cancelled under a gubernatorial state of emergency do not have to be made up, and that an e-learning day only counts if students are online with a teacher for about six hours. Each of the 139 regular districts makes its own call, usually the evening before, and announces it through the district site and local TV.

Questions people ask
- Does Alabama close school for ice without snow?
- Yes, and that is the most common Alabama closure. Freezing rain glazes bridges and overpasses that ALDOT treats first but cannot keep clear once rain has washed the brine away. The meter scores every hour of freezing rain in the forecast, so a night of freezing drizzle with no snow at all can show a high chance.
- Do Alabama schools have to make up snow days?
- Usually, because the 180-day or 1,080-hour minimum is tied to funding. The exception is a day lost under a governor's state of emergency, which the State Superintendent said in January 2024 does not have to be made up. Many systems also build weather days into the calendar.
- How often does Birmingham actually get a snow day?
- Birmingham's airport records an inch or more of snow on about 0.5 days a year in the 1991-2020 normals, so roughly one such day every other winter. Huntsville sees about 0.7. Closures are more frequent than that because ice and forecast caution close schools before any snow sticks.
- Will the whole state close at once?
- No. North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley close far more often than the Gulf Coast. Type your own ZIP: the meter reads the hourly forecast for your spot and applies the same half-inch threshold, so Huntsville and Mobile can show very different numbers on the same night.
